The f/1.4 is faster in terms of auto-focus than the f/1.8. Update: The newer EF 50mm f/1.8 STM introduced in 2015 is now my recommendation over the much older EF 50mm f/1.8 II (and often even over the more expensive EF 50mm f/1.4). There's not much difference between the two in terms of cost and optical performance.
Paul Carroll has just posted a new review of Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM lens at DxOMark. This pancake is a fast and versatile lens with advanced AF and superior optics for Canon APS-C cameras at the lowest price of only $149. The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is for full-frame cameras. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is for crop cameras. Voigtländer makes three pancake SL II lenses, the Color Skopar 20/3.5 and 28/2.8 and the Ultron 40/2, but these lenses, while they do communicate with the camera body to allow aperture control and metering, do not autofocus.
The lightest and thinnest lens in the EF-S series for APS-C sensor cameras, the EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM is a pancake lens measuring 22.8mm in thickness (about a third in thickness in comparison to a kit lens) and weighing only 125g (the same weight as a smart phone).
Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. This is a compact little pancake lens — just 22.8mm (0.9in) thick — that’s designed for Canon’s crop sensor (APS-C) cameras. It has a full frame equivalent focal
Canon has just announced its first ever pancake lens for the EOS R system: the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM. Weighing in at only 120g, and measuring just 24.7mm in length, the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is absolutely tiny for a full-frame lens – and indeed is the smallest Canon RF lens available. Given its tiny size and form factor, it is also a

Sony E 20mm f/2.8: This is a lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It offers a wide view and a bright aperture while weighing a mere 69 grams.
OVERVIEW. Characterized by a truly thin profile, along with an advanced autofocus motor, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime designed for APS-C-size EOS DSLRs. Providing a 38mm-equivalent focal length, this lens takes on a slightly wider-than-normal perspective to benefit its use in a broad variety of shooting situations.
The 24mm pancake does not have any image stabilization, but is fast enough to compensate for most shaking, unless it’s dark. The glass seems so tack sharp for a $150 lens, it’s a great value. Laguna Canyon, looking east towards Irvine. Full-auto – ISO 100, f/9, 1/320. The STM motor is quick, and quiet – again, practically the same as
